The sandy shoreline of Ocean Shores is the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle that comes with everyday life. From horseback riding to area hiking trails to activities for the whole family, there’s plenty of fun to be had in this Washington coast town near Oyhut Bay Seaside Village. If you are looking for something unique to add to your Ocean Shores itinerary, try your hand at clam digging. This Pacific Northwest pastime is only allowed during certain times of the year, so be sure to research ahead of time if your visit falls during clam digging season.

Where Can You Dig for Clams near Ocean Shores?

The Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) looks at several factors when setting the razor clam season, including assessing the population and testing clams for toxins. The season usually occurs in the fall and winter, but there is sometimes still clamming in spring. The WDFW will schedule digs, but be sure to check the schedule before heading out for cancellations.

Razor clams are generally found on intertidal coastal beaches, which are exposed at a low tide. The harvest area is divided into five major management zones, two of which are near Ocean Shores. Find a spot on Mocrocks Beach from the Copalis River to the south boundary of the Quinault Indian Reservation. You can also try your hand at digging for razor clams on Copalis Beach from the north jetty at the mouth of Grays Harbor to Copalis River.

Tips and Tools for Clam Digging

One of the most important things you need before you start digging is a license. You can purchase a license online or at the Ace Hardware in Ocean Shores if you need it sooner than 10 days. Other tools you need for an Ocean Shores clam digging adventure include:

  • A clam shovel
  • A clam gun, either a metal or PVC pipe option
  • A calm net to hold the razor clams you dig up

There is a method to finding clams. First, you want to look for a clam show, which can be a keyhole, a doughnut, or a dimple. Once you find one, break out your clam shovel and get to digging.
