Driving on the beach is one of the distinctive Ocean Shores experiences, but the shoreline is a public environment with changing conditions, pedestrians, wildlife, and specific rules. Prepare before you enter and choose caution over convenience.

Check the official rules first

Access, speed limits, seasonal restrictions, and closures can change. Review the Washington State Parks Seashore Conservation Area rules and safety information before every trip. Obey all signs and directions from officials.

Know the tide and weather

Check the tide table and forecast before entering. Rising water, soft sand, fog, and winter surf can create risk quickly. Never drive through saltwater or close to the surf line.

Share the beach carefully

Expect walkers, children, pets, horses, birds, and vehicles moving unpredictably. Drive slowly, leave a wide buffer, and park only where permitted. Avoid sensitive habitat and keep away from resting or feeding wildlife.

Protect your vehicle

Use designated access points and stay on firm, established travel areas. Know your vehicle’s clearance and traction limits. Salt and sand can cause damage, so rinse the undercarriage after beach exposure.

When not to drive

If visibility is poor, the tide is high, surf is hazardous, or sand appears soft, enjoy the beach on foot from a safe access. A vacation plan should never depend on beach driving.

Oyhut Bay guests can explore the coast from a comfortable south peninsula base. Browse the Local Area Guide for alternatives and find an Oyhut Bay vacation home.
