What Is the Oyhut Wildlife Recreation Area?
Found on the south end of the Ocean Shores peninsula, this wildlife area is part of the Johns River Wildlife Area. A visit to Ocean Shores isn’t complete without exploring this area, which is over 600 acres. These wildlife areas are focused on wetland and estuary habitats that support diverse wildlife from small game to fish populations. Oyhut Wildlife Area is one of four remaining nesting sites in Washington for the western snowy plover, a threatened species.
A Guide to What You Can Do during Your Visit
You will need a Discover Pass to get onto any Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife land, so be sure to get yours before arriving. The acreage that makes up this wildlife area is a popular spot for birding and waterfowl hunting. If you are interested in hunting, you are restricted to shotguns using birdshot only, and hunting is limited to certain games. For more information, reference the Ocean Shores municipal code.
A relaxing way to spend your visit is wildlife watching. There are no trails throughout the area, which keeps visitors out of habitats and makes it a fantastic place to see wildlife and waterfowl. You might be able to spot:
- Western snowy plover
- Birds of prey
Don’t forget your binoculars and camera to spot and capture the wildlife you come across.
